Position Summary:

The Cathedral Canon will approach the entirety of their work with grace, good humor, and an unwavering commitment to serving the cathedral community in lifegiving ways. We seek a highly relational person with initiative and a demonstrated ability to work well with persons of all ages. This person will serve as a visionary leader and staff resource to various ministry groups with empowering others for ministry.

The Cathedral Canon shall share in the mission and ministry of Saint Mark’s Cathedral Parish, as pastor, priest and teacher, in the specific manner guided by the Dean of the Cathedral.  By word and action, informed at all times by the Holy Scriptures, the Book of Common Prayer, the Constitution and Canons of the General Convention of the Episcopal Church and of the Diocese of Olympia, the Cathedral Canon shall proclaim the Gospel, love and serve Christ's people, caring alike for young and old, strong and weak, rich and poor, and nurture and strengthen them to glorify God in this life and in the life to come.

As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, the Cathedral Canon will work closely with the dean and other cathedral clergy, several program staff and lay leaders in an array of ministries that embody the common life of this cathedral community, which is a blend of parish, diocesan resource, and gathering place for the broader community in this region. Together, the Senior Leadership Team will ensure a comprehensive program for the formation of disciples of all ages, providing several touchpoints for intergenerational experiences of worship, formation, fellowship, and justice work.

The Cathedral Canon position is designed to be full-time, although proposals for creative alternatives are welcome. The Canon’s scheduled work week is five days, usually measured as ten to twelve units of mornings, afternoons, or evenings in various combinations reflecting the demands of this ministry, and shall include Sunday activities. One “unit” is defined as approximately 4 hours of work.  In general, no more than three evenings per week shall be expected of the Canon to be committed to congregational activities. The Canon is expected to preserve at least one continuous twenty-four hour period each week solely for personal use.

Health and dental insurance, pension, and a robust array of paid leave benefits (including paid sabbatical leave) are provided according to cathedral policy. Nominations, applications, and questions of any kind may be directed to the Dean until the position is filled. Appointment will be contingent upon completion of background screening and successful completion of training in the prevention of child sexual abuse as required by the Episcopal Church.

 

KEY MINISTRY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Clear Vision: participate in guiding theologically robust, liturgically sensitive, and age-appropriate curricula and programming that balances spiritual formation for all ages.
  • Empowering Others: guide selection and training of lay persons for their baptized ministry; resource and encourage community spiritual formation.
  • Team Collaboration: participate in staff meetings and other strategic and tactical planning efforts; work closely with other clergy to ensure provision of high-quality well-coordinated pastoral care is attained;
  • Creative Intention: find innovative ways to form community, engage in mission, become Beloved Community, and serve as pastoral presence in a resource-size parish.
  • Administrative Leadership. Provide supervisory support for select departmental and operational staff as part of a collaborative distribution of responsibilities shared by Senior Leadership.
  • Consistent Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills; regular communication with each ministry group supported.

 

ESSENTIAL QUALITIES and QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Christian Maturity: mature practitioner of the Christian faith, sound theological grounding of ministry, emphasizes healthy relationships and communication; comfort with diverse liturgical forms of worship.
  • Team Player: works well in collaboration with others, strong communication skills, commitment to investing in people.
  • Missional Alignment: understands and supports the church’s mission, vision and values. basic knowledge of non-profit accounting practices and budget management.
  • Relational Connectivity: strong interpersonal skills, commitment to building relational trust with the church community.
  • Teachable & Studious: ability to humbly receive feedback and instruction, desire to learn and pursue continuing education/training.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master of Divinity degree (or Master degree in theology, biblical studies, or Christian education) or commensurate degree work
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in parish-based ministry as clergy.

 

Screening/Training Requirements: Satisfactory completion (or current certification in this diocese) of Safeguarding God’s Children/People and background screening.
