SUMMARY:Godly Play
DESCRIPTION:FIRST AND THIRD SUNDAYS OF THE MONTH\, 10–11 A.M.\, in the St Nicholas Building\, 2nd floor \nOn May 4\, there will be an open house of the classrooms instead of a usual lesson. \nOn May 18\, Godly Play participants are encourages to go to Bloedel Hall\, where Canon Griffin will be offering a Godly Play lesson for the whole congregation. \nGodly Play meets as usual on the first and third Sundays June\, June 1 and 15\, and then takes a summer hiatus until September. \nDeveloped over the course of the last 40 years\, Godly Play is a Montessori-informed curriculum and method of exploring the sacred stories and practices of our religious tradition in a way that creates a space for “listening to God with children.” \nRegular Godly Play gatherings for kids age 3 and up are offered on the first and third Sundays of the month in the 10 a.m. hour. Saint Mark’s offers two Godly Play groups: the Weavers’ Class (age 3 to grade 2) and the Fishers’ Class (grades 3 to 5). Meet in the classrooms on the second floor of the St. Nicholas Building. \nContact Canon Barrie with questions: wbarrie@saintmarks.org

SUMMARY:Sunday Forum: A Crash Course in the Principals of Non-Violence
DESCRIPTION:SUNDAY\, JANUARY 19\, 2025\, 10:10–10:50 A.M.\, Bloedel Hall \n \n\n\n\n\nIn this forum on MLK Weekend\, we’ll take a brief look at the fascinating history of non-violence with a special emphasis on the legacy of Bayard Rustin\, a student of Mohandus (Mahatma) Gandhi\, who brought back his learnings to the leaders of the American Civil Rights movement. A Black gay man and a Quaker\, Rustin became a trusted advisor to Martin Luther King\, Jr\, and was the organizer of the March on Washington. While the principles of non-violence deserve much more time than this forum allows\, Canon Barrie will provide resources for further exploration\, including the pledge of non-violence and the invitation to a participate in the annual Season for Non-Violence.

We’ve chosen two books by Matthew Desmond\, Evicted from 2016 and Poverty\, by America\, published in 2023. \nThanks to a grant from the Episcopal Periodical Society\, there are copies of both books available for anyone in the cathedral community for free. Books will be available to pick up on Sundays in the nave and in the church office during the week. \nAlso available through the same grant is I See You\, a wordless picture book published by the American Psychological Association intended to open a door for kids and parents to begin a conversation about homelessness. I See You is available for families with children and comes with resources for parents\, educators\, and neighbors. \nBook groups (in person and online) to discuss Evicted will be held in January. Groups will discuss Poverty\, by America in February. Curious to learn more about the subject and the author? Check out this podcast interview with author Matthew Desmond. \nPLEASE NOTE: If you have lived experience of housing insecurity and are interested in reading Evicted in the safe space of an affinity group\, please reach out to co-facilitators Deborah Anderson (waterlily3in1@gmail.com)\, Canon Wendy Claire Barrie (wbarrie@saintmarks.org)\, or one of the clergy. \nRegistration required. SUMMARY:Organ by Night (10:10 p.m)
DESCRIPTION:THIRD SUNDAY OF EACH MONTH\, 10:10 P.M. (immediately following Compline)\, in the cathedral nave and in the organ loft \nThe tradition of informal mini-concerts on the Flentrop following Compline have introduced generations of Seattleites to the power and beauty of a real pipe organ. All are welcome to listen in the nave\, or join the organist in the loft to see what playing an instrument of this size is really like. (The radio program The Organ Loft\, which airs on KING-FM immediately following Compline each week\, was inspired by this tradition.) A Q&A in the loft usually follows the performance. \nFind a list of past and upcoming recitalists here. \nThe new iteration of this offering\, called Organ by Night\, will be offered once a month\, on the third Sunday of each month.
