SUMMARY:Wisdom School Plenary: A Spirituality of Suffering and Solidarity
DESCRIPTION:Wisdom School 2026-27 Open Plenary with The Very Rev. Steven L. Thomason \nHow are we to respond to human suffering in our time? What does solidarity with those who are suffering look like? What does compassion\, meaning ‘to suffer with\,’ really mean in a world that has erected all sorts of diversions—the economies of war\, wealth disparities\, and constant entertainment? If we are created in God’s image\, and if there is so much suffering in the world\, then God\, too\, must be suffering. How else can we understand the meaning of the cross\, of Christ crucified? In the person of Jesus\, we come to understand more fully the truth that God is always on the side of suffering\, wherever it is found—in combatants on both sides\, in victims and perpetrators\, in friends and foes\, as uncomfortable as that may make us. Is anyone beyond the pale of God’s redemptive love\, or undeserving of our love? \nProgram is free; optional community dinner at 6 p.m. ($8/adult; $25/family max.)  \n

SUMMARY:Sunday Forum: The Visual Storytelling Project
DESCRIPTION:The Visual Storytelling Project is a museum-caliber set of eight panels that tell the story of housing discrimination and Black resilience in the neighborhoods in and around Capitol Hill. As the cathedral and its partners prepare to break ground on Cathedral Place\, a new Affordable Housing Community being planned on the site of the former St. Nicholas School\, the storyboard project will educate the community on the historic practices that continue to have a measurable impact on the neighborhood\, such as restrictive covenants and racial redlining. Using archival materials\, images\, maps\, graphics\, and narrative\, the exhibit tells a story of systemic injustices and the enduring strength and creativity of Seattle’s Black community. Additionally\, the storyboard is designed to empower viewers to take measurable action for repentance and repair. The Affordable Housing Committee will hold two opening presentations\, one during the Sunday Forum hour and one after the 11 a.m. service on September 20. \nAdditional interactive components provided through Saint Mark’s Intergenerational Ministries include a fair housing dollhouse and a collaborative neighborhood design project that guide participants of all ages in considering what Beloved Community needs to flourish.

SUMMARY:A Day of Godly Play
DESCRIPTION:Led by the Rev. Canon Emily Griffin and Joy Studer\, Licensed Godly Play Trainers \nThrough a collaboration between the Diocese of Olympia and Saint Mark’s Cathedral\, we are pleased to offer a day of workshops for all: those who are new to this methodology and those who have been practicing for a long time. Join us for a day of learning\, community building\, and sharing best practices. After a full Godly Play session together\, we’ll offer an introductory track for new storytellers and doorpersons and a second track for those seeking to deepen their practice – with a focus on newer stories (such as the Lord’s Prayer and the Psalms) and tips for engaging older children. We’ll conclude the day together with a reflection on children’s spirituality and resources for parents and other caregivers. \nRegistration required; fee of $35 per person\, which includes continental breakfast and lunch. We don’t want cost to be a barrier to participation. If you need financial assistance\, contact Canon Wendy at wbarrie@saintmarks.org. \n*Please note that there is no elevator in the St. Nicholas Building. The event will take place on the 2nd floor. Reach out to wbarrie@saintmarks.org for accessibility options before registering.
