DESCRIPTION:In July\, the Second Sunday Book Group will discuss Culpability (2025) by Bruce Holsinger. In this fictional story\, a family has a collision in a self-driving car where three of the five family members are seriously injured and the two occupants in the car they collided with are killed. In the aftermath of this tragedy\, the author explores the family’s fragility and guilt\, the world of AI\, and who or what is responsible for the accident. There’s both legal and moral responsibility. Are they different? The wife and mother of the family happens to be a world-renowned AI ethicist who is writing a book on humanity’s responsibility for the morality of AI systems. Her theories have now come close to home.

This annual event for the entire cathedral community is a joyful and lively way to reconnect with one another after the adventures of summer. \nChildren’s Chapel will be held at both the 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. services to make it easy for families to be present. \nBring your backpacks and briefcases to the labyrinth 15 minutes after the 11 a.m. service concludes to receive God’s blessing (and a finger labyrinth!) for the new school year/program year ahead. \nThere is no charge for the picnic\, which in addition to the grilled food will include fruit\, sides\, beverages\, and dessert. Please register for the picnic so we know how much food to prepare.

DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, October 25\, Emily Meeks will preach at all morning services at Saint Mark’s. \nEmily Meeks is a candidate for Holy Orders to the priesthood in the Diocese of Olympia and a senior at Virginia Theological Seminary (VTS). At VTS\, she has been grateful to explore the intersection of memory and spirituality—cognitive\, embodied\, and sacramental ways of remembering the Holy. She is especially interested in ways that congregations can support people with memory loss\, and their caretakers\, on their spiritual journey through intergenerational relationships and liturgical practices. It was on a bike commute to a new healthcare marketing job that she discovered Saint Mark’s Cathedral and The Episcopal Church\, which forever changed her spiritual journey. Emily is married to Stuart\, and together\, they enjoy connecting across cultures through travel\, hiking\, and food. Just prior to seminary\, Emily served as Saint Mark’s 20s/30s staff lead and special projects coordinator with a focus on affordable housing project management and grant writing.
