SUMMARY:Cathedral Commons: Cultivating Beloved Community
DESCRIPTION:The Affordable Housing Committee and Kendall Clawson\, the consultant for Saint Mark’s CBO will share about their work of “repent and repair” as the cathedral prepares to welcome new neighbors to Cathedral Place\, an affordable housing community on the property of the St. Nicholas School to the north of the cathedral. As part of this effort\, the Committee is telling the story of how Saint Mark’s intends to co-create beloved community through a community-based organization that will offer services and support to the residents of Cathedral Place. The Committee will also share the history of the Capitol Hill neighborhood and Saint Mark’s complicity in excluding Black residents from home ownership through the Visual Storytelling Project\, a narrative art installation describing our relationship with the practice of redlining and racially restrictive covenants in the Capitol Hill neighborhood. Together we’ll imagine what beloved community and a flourishing neighborhood looks and feels like\, and what it might ask of us to cultivate it.

DESCRIPTION:Between services on Sunday mornings\, we create space for children to deeply experience the texts and stories of the Bible that make us Christian people and form our faith. Classes are open to children in preschool through fifth grade and offer children the opportunity to grow in community with each other and caring adults. \nOn November 15\, the younger class will learn about Exile and Return while the older class will dive into The Prophet Isaiah. \nGodly Play is a Montessori-based curriculum that recognizes that children are already in relationship with God. It invites them to wonder deeply about the core stories of scripture and imaginatively explore our liturgical traditions as it gives them practice in speaking the language of our Christian faith. \nLearn more and register your child here.

DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by sociologist and author Susan Pitchford \n \nIt’s easy to rejoice when we feel God’s presence: a moving service\, a beautiful vista\, an answered prayer. But when God feels absent\, it’s another story. We can easily assume that we’ve failed God somehow\, that God is disappointed in us or even angry. Yet the witness of Teresa of Calcutta\, John of the Cross\, and countless other saints tells us that the spiritual journey leads through dark places at times. Far from being a sign of failure\, spiritual darkness can be a hopeful sign that we are growing closer to God and more deeply connected to our neighbors. \nPart of the Wisdom School 2026-27 season \nProgram is free; optional community dinner at 6 p.m. ($8/adult; $25/family max.)  \n  \n  \nSusan Pitchford retired after thirty years of teaching sociology at the UW. A writer\, speaker\, retreat leader\, and spiritual director\, she is the author of The Sacred Gaze\, God in the Dark\, Following Francis\, and The Paradox of Poverty\, as well as a regular contributor to Give Us This Day\, a monthly prayer resource. Susan is also a professed Franciscan in the Third Order\, Society of St. Francis (TSSF)\, and the Guardian for Lifelong Faith Formation for TSSF’s Province of the Americas. She also serves as a spiritual director for Saint Mark’s Center for Spirituality and Action.
