SUMMARY:The Longest Night
DESCRIPTION:SUNDAY\, DECEMBER 22\, 7 P.M.\, cathedral nave \n \n\n\n\nEach year Saint Mark’s offers a service for those for whom the holiday season brings a mix of emotions\, and for anyone for whom grief is a companion in life. The service (formerly known as “Blue Christmas”) is held near the winter solstice\, marking time with intention in the candlelit cathedral while holding space for those present to pray\, remember loved ones\, and (if desired) have anointing by the priests before we share Holy Communion. \nAlthough the Christmas season is claimed by our culture as festive and happy\, for many people it is a painful time of year. Memories of loved ones who have passed away or other losses can stir up grief and exacerbate loneliness. For those who are grappling with the loss of health or happier times\, the expectation to be joyful can be difficult. \nAnd for others\, preparation for Christmas stirs up a general sadness that is hard to pin down. This year in particular\, as the nation looks forward to an uncertain and frightening future\, these emotions may be even more intense \nThis service is offered in the nave\, but is not livestreamed. Dean Steve Thomason will preside\, Canon Rich Weyls will offer a brief reflection\, and they\, along with Canon Emily Griffin will be on hand to offering anointing and prayers individually for any who would like that. DESCRIPTION:SATURDAYS\, 9:30 A.M. – 12 P.M\, Skinner Auditorium \nThe meeting is occasionally moved to Bloedel Hall. \nThose unable to attend in-person are also welcome to tune in via Zoom or YouTube livestream. \nSaint Mark’s Cathedral cathedral is the host this meeting of the Clear Mountain Buddhist Monastery community. \nJoin for a morning of meditation\, teaching\, and spiritual conversation over coffee! Each Saturday from 9:30 a.m.–11:30 a.m.\, local practitioners gather together in the Saint Mark’s Cathedral Skinner Auditorium (located in the St Nicholas School Building\, just north of the cathedral building\, 1501 10th Ave E.) for a community meditation\, teaching\, and coffee social. \nGatherings begin with a guided sit from 9:30–10 a.m. designed to accommodate and empower a wide variety of practices\, from Buddhist meditation to centering prayer. The morning continues with a Dhamma teaching and Q&A from 10–11 followed by a chance\, for those who want\, to discuss life and practice over coffee from 11–noon. DESCRIPTION:THIRD THURSDAYS\, 10 A.M.–2 P.M.\, in Cathedral House Room Room 210  \nNOTE: The Quilt Ministry will be meeting as usual on the Juneteenth holiday\, June 19\, 2025\, although the cathedral offices will be closed and doors will be locked. Contact quilting@saintmarks.org in advance if you plan to come that day\, to ensure someone will let you in to the building. \nThe Quilt Ministry of Saint Mark’s crafts beautiful\, one-of-a kind quilts for parishioners in times of illness or transition\, blessing quilts for staff or parish family departures\, small blankets for parish newborns\, and other occasions as requested by clergy. The ministry also does other sewing projects as needed\, such as tote bags\, ditty bags for Mission to Seafarers\, and even fabric elements of Sandy Nelson’s summer 2024 cathedral art installations. \nThe group gathers monthly on the third Thursday of the month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Room 210 to work on pieces together\, plan future projects\, and to share stories and a potluck lunch in community. We have sewing machines available\, and you don’t need to be able to sew already—there is plenty of work to do that can be easily taught. All are welcome\, of any age. DESCRIPTION:1st\, 3rd\, & 5th THURSDAYS OF THE MONTH:\nTHE HOLY EUCHARIST\, IN-PERSON IN THOMSEN CHAPEL \nOn the 2nd & 4th Thursdays of the month\, the Thursday Morning congregation now meets with Daily Morning Prayer at 7:30 a.m.. \n \nAt 7 a.m. on the first\, third\, and fifth Thursdays of the month\, an in-person service of Holy Eucharist offered in Thomsen Chapel. Fellowship and a community breakfast follow the service. \nUPDATE: The regular Thursday morning attendees have decided that their online service on the second and fourth Sundays of the month should merge with the online Daily Morning Prayer Group. On those Thursdays when there is not an in-person Eucharist\, gather online at 7:30 (rather than 7) using the normal Daily Office link. There will still be time available for checking in and chatting following the liturgy. All are welcome! \n
