SUMMARY:The Longest Night 2025
DESCRIPTION:SUNDAY\, DECEMBER 21\, 7 P.M.\, cathedral nave \n \nEach year Saint Mark’s offers a service for those for whom the holiday season brings a mix of emotions\, and for anyone for whom grief is a companion in life. The service (formerly known as “Blue Christmas“) is held near the winter solstice\, marking time with intention in the candlelit cathedral while holding space for those present to pray\, remember loved ones\, and (if desired) have anointing by the priests before we share Holy Communion. \nAlthough the Christmas season is claimed by our culture as festive and happy\, for many people it is a painful time of year. Memories of loved ones who have passed away or other losses can stir up grief and exacerbate loneliness. For those who are grappling with the loss of health or happier times\, the expectation to be joyful can be difficult. And for others\, preparation for Christmas stirs up a general sadness that is hard to pin down. \nThis service is offered in the nave\, but is not livestreamed. Canon Rich Weyls will preside\, Canon Emily Griffin will offer a brief reflection\, and they\, along with Dean Thomason and Fr. Conley will be on hand to offering anointing and prayers individually for any who would like that. All are welcome at this service\, wherever you are on your spiritual journey or whatever concerns you bring.

SUMMARY:Godly Play
DESCRIPTION:FIRST AND THIRD SUNDAY OF THE MONTH\, SEPTEMBER–JUNE (except in November 2025 and April 2026\, when it will meet on the second and third Sundays)\, 10–11 A.M.\, in the Godly Play classrooms on the 2nd floor of the St. Nicholas Bldg.  \nBetween services on Sunday mornings\, we create space for children from preschool through elementary school (age 3 up to 5th grade) to deeply experience the texts and stories of the Bible that make us Christian people and form our faith\, and also to grow in community with each other and caring adults. Using steadfastly non-digital modalities\, we tell the stories and then make space for the children to make the stories their own for life by using the materials or art to expand\, retell\, and experience the stories in their own ways. For example\, it’s magical to watch children self-organize to collectively create a “crucifixion and Easter scape” by finding and arranging materials from the room to arrange in a box of sand to exemplify all of Holy Week! We use the Godly Play curriculum. Class sessions are held generally on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month during the school year. \nLearn more and find a complete schedule and registration link here. \n\nParents and Toddlers Room\nWhenever Godly Play is being offered on Sunday morning on the second floor of the St Nicholas Bldg\, the Parents and Toddlers Room is open and available at the same time on the first floor. This is for kids under three\, and parents must remain with their children. A room host (with Safe Church training) is on hand to welcome you and your little one\, along with age appropriate toys and books\, a carpet for crawlers\, and a table and chairs. Please contact Canon Barrie for more information or to help support this ministry: wbarrie@saintmarks.org

SUMMARY:Contemplative Prayer
DESCRIPTION:MOST TUESDAYS\, 7–8 P.M.\, in the cathedral nave \nNOTE: Contemplative Prayer is suspended when the monthly Taizé service is offered in the nave instead. Contemplative Prayer is also occasionally suspended or relocated on other Tuesdays due to other events and conflicts in the nave.  \n \nTuesday evening Contemplative Prayer gatherings begin with a period of silent meditation\, followed by discussions on a variety of contemplative practices including Centering Prayer \nThis time of meditative prayer is open to anyone who yearns for a time to simply sit in the presence of the Divine—whether you sit regularly and miss doing it with others\, are curious\, or think you can’t do it\, come\, sit together and talk about it. There is no doing it right or wrong; there is only doing it. Read more here. \nThese sessions will be led by Phil Fox Rose\, who was introduced to centering prayer by Cynthia Bourgeault in the early 90s and has been practicing and sharing it ever since.
