SUMMARY:Community Book Study: The Asylum Seekers
DESCRIPTION:SUNDAYS\, DECEMBER 7 and 14\, 2025\, 12:30 to 2 p.m. in Cathedral Room 210\, in person.\nThis Advent as we begin tracing the migrant journey of the Holy Family\, the Restorative Justice Council invites the entire community of Saint Mark’s to participate in a book study to help guide our response as followers of Jesus to questions of migrant justice. We’ve chosen The Asylum Seekers: A Chronicle of Life\, Death and Community at the Border (2025) by Episcopal priest Cristina Rathbone. The book traces her four-month accompaniment of Mexican asylum seekers in 2019 as their informal chaplain at a tent community in Juarez. While laws and enforcement practices have changed since then\, the violence pushing our neighbors to flee their homes and the spiritual reserves required to make such journeys remains. We’ll consider up through Chapter 18 at our first session and finish the book in our second. \nQuestions? Contact the Rev. Canon Emily Griffin at egriffin@saintmarks.org.

SUMMARY:Godly Play
DESCRIPTION:FIRST AND THIRD SUNDAY OF THE MONTH\, SEPTEMBER–JUNE (except in November 2025 and April 2026\, when it will meet on the second and third Sundays)\, 10–11 A.M.\, in the Godly Play classrooms on the 2nd floor of the St. Nicholas Bldg.  \nBetween services on Sunday mornings\, we create space for children from preschool through elementary school (age 3 up to 5th grade) to deeply experience the texts and stories of the Bible that make us Christian people and form our faith\, and also to grow in community with each other and caring adults. Using steadfastly non-digital modalities\, we tell the stories and then make space for the children to make the stories their own for life by using the materials or art to expand\, retell\, and experience the stories in their own ways. For example\, it’s magical to watch children self-organize to collectively create a “crucifixion and Easter scape” by finding and arranging materials from the room to arrange in a box of sand to exemplify all of Holy Week! We use the Godly Play curriculum. Class sessions are held generally on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month during the school year. \nLearn more and find a complete schedule and registration link here. \n\nParents and Toddlers Room\nWhenever Godly Play is being offered on Sunday morning on the second floor of the St Nicholas Bldg\, the Parents and Toddlers Room is open and available at the same time on the first floor. This is for kids under three\, and parents must remain with their children. A room host (with Safe Church training) is on hand to welcome you and your little one\, along with age appropriate toys and books\, a carpet for crawlers\, and a table and chairs. Please contact Canon Barrie for more information or to help support this ministry: wbarrie@saintmarks.org

SUMMARY:*The Seattle Choral Company presents: Christmas in Latvia
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, December 6 \nin the cathedral nave \n\n7:00 pm Pre-concert talk by director Freddie Coleman\n7:30 pm Audience carol sing-along\n8:00 pm Concert\n\nA Latvian Christmas is a vibrant blend of Christian traditions and ancient pagan customs. While the holiday celebrates the birth of Christ with church services\, carols\, and festive meals\, it also preserves centuries-old winter solstice rituals. These include mummers’ parades\, fortune-telling\, and the burning of logs to chase away evil spirits and welcome the sun. This unique fusion creates a rich and magical atmosphere that reflects Latvia’s deep cultural roots and seasonal spirit. \nThe works of the four Latvian composers featured on this program offer a musical journey through centuries of Latvian Christmas traditions\, reflecting both sacred and folk influences that continue to shape the nation’s holiday celebrations. \nLearn more about the program here. \n  \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE

SUMMARY:Cathedral Commons—Forum on The Council of Nicaea
DESCRIPTION:WEDNESDAY\, DECEMBER 3\, 6:45–8:15 P.M.\, in person in Bloedel Hall and online via Zoom \nWITH THE REV. CANON RICH WEYLS \nThis past summer marked the 1700th anniversary of the First Council of Nicaea (325). Martin Luther considered it “the most sacred of all councils.” The decrees of the Council helped us find language to describe what we mean when we say “God.” We will explore the historical context of the Council while reflecting upon its rich theology in order to discover significance for today. Rather than being a list of intellectual propositions\, the Council is a gift to the church and an act of praise to God. \nJoin online using this Zoom link. \nProgram is free; optional community dinner at 6 p.m. ($8/adult; $25/family max.)

SUMMARY:Contemplative Prayer
DESCRIPTION:MOST TUESDAYS\, 7–8 P.M.\, in the cathedral nave \nNOTE: Contemplative Prayer is suspended when the monthly Taizé service is offered in the nave instead. Contemplative Prayer is also occasionally suspended or relocated on other Tuesdays due to other events and conflicts in the nave.  \n \nTuesday evening Contemplative Prayer gatherings begin with a period of silent meditation\, followed by discussions on a variety of contemplative practices including Centering Prayer \nThis time of meditative prayer is open to anyone who yearns for a time to simply sit in the presence of the Divine—whether you sit regularly and miss doing it with others\, are curious\, or think you can’t do it\, come\, sit together and talk about it. There is no doing it right or wrong; there is only doing it. Read more here. \nThese sessions will be led by Phil Fox Rose\, who was introduced to centering prayer by Cynthia Bourgeault in the early 90s and has been practicing and sharing it ever since.
