The Shakers’ vast song tradition helps to elaborate their complex theology. At the same time\, the song tradition reinforces the Shakers’ communal identity and their novel conception of social order. Each Saturday from 9:30 a.m.–11:30 a.m.\, local practitioners gather together in the Saint Mark’s Cathedral Skinner Auditorium (located in the St Nicholas School Building\, just north of the cathedral building\, 1501 10th Ave E.) for a community meditation\, teaching\, and coffee social. \nGatherings begin with a guided sit from 9:30–10 a.m. designed to accommodate and empower a wide variety of practices\, from Buddhist meditation to centering prayer. The morning continues with a Dhamma teaching and Q&A from 10–11 followed by a chance\, for those who want\, to discuss life and practice over coffee from 11–noon. DESCRIPTION:SATURDAY\, NOVEMBER 9\, 2024\, 9:30 A.M.–12:30 P.M.\, in person in Bloedel Hall and online via Zoom. \nFACILITATED BY DEBIE THOMAS \nThough Christians are called to be an “Easter people\,” a people of good news\, joy\, and resurrection\, we are also called to live and speak with authenticity in a world that is not yet what it should be. Sometimes\, that call requires us to walk the Emmaus Road\, an ancient road that begins with lament before it carries us to hope. Neither despair nor whining\, lament is an honest cry from our heart to the heart of a God who weeps over the world’s brokenness\, and then offers us a grounded\, reality-based hope that does not require denial. In this half-day workshop\, we will explore lament as a healing\, justice-oriented practice that will help us find our way to the fullness of resurrection hope. Our time together will include meditation\, teaching\, journaling\, and conversation. \nRegistration required. Fee: $25

DESCRIPTION:FIRST AND THIRD SUNDAYS OF THE MONTH\, 10–11 A.M.\, in the St Nicholas Building\, 2nd floor \nNote: Godly Play will NOT meet on November 3\, due to the Baptism celebration on All Saints’ Sunday. It will meet on the second Sunday of the months\, November 10\, instead. It will them meet on November 17 as usual. \nDeveloped over the course of the last 40 years\, Godly Play is a Montessori-informed curriculum and method of exploring the sacred stories and practices of our religious tradition in a way that creates a space for “listening to God with children.” \nRegular Godly Play gatherings for kids age 3 and up are offered on the first and third Sundays of the month in the 10 a.m. hour. Saint Mark’s offers two Godly Play groups: the Weavers’ Class (age 3 to grade 2) and the Fishers’ Class (grades 3 to 5).
