WEEKLY HYMN PREVIEWS

 

When the cathedral building was closed to public worship due to the pandemic, Canon Kleinschmidt was searching for new ways to allow congregants at home to feel more connected to the livestreamed cathedral liturgies. And so, beginning just a few weeks after lockdown, he began a weekly video, offered live each Thursday on Facebook, in which he would provide a brief introduction to the hymns that would be sung at the following Sunday's morning liturgy. These informal chats quickly became very popular! He is assisted by Associate Organist John Stuntebeck and Communications Director Gregory Bloch.

UPDATE 4/9/2021: Hymn Previews have now been offered almost every week for an entire year, and the reaction to the videos on the part of community members near and far has been extremely positive! The full year's worth of videos can all be viewed here. Now, however, since many of the hymns will repeat what was discussed last year, it is time to temporarily pause the weekly offering, before starting up again with a new, refreshed format. Canon Kleinschmidt says:

Introduction to Hymns of the Triduum, April 1, 2, & 3, 2021

On Thursday, March 25, Canon Michael Kleinschmidt presented this week's Hymn introduction. Rather than repeat the presentation about Palm Sunday's hymns, which were covered last year, Canon Kleinschmidt discusses four hymns from the liturgies of the Triduum. This introduction was presented live on Facebook. The hymns discussed are:

  • "Three holy days enfold us now" [WLP #733, but sung to the tune Rockingham]
  • "Now, my tongue the mystery telling" [Hymn #329]
  • "O sacred Head, sore wounded," sung to David Hurd's exquisite tune Redding [WLP #735].
  • "Now the green blade riseth" [Hymn #204]
