SUMMARY:Cathedral Commons—Letters from Prison
DESCRIPTION:WEDNESDAY\, JANUARY 14\, 2026\, 6:45–8:15 P.M.\, in person in Bloedel Hall or online via Zoom.\n \nLetters from Prison—St. Paul\, Bonhoeffer\, and King\n \nFACILITATED BY DEAN STEVE THOMASON \nSt. Paul wrote at least four of his New Testament letters while in prison. Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a prolific writer in the concentration camps of WWII\, and Dr. Martin Luther King’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail” is considered by many to make the compelling case for civil rights. Something about the crucible of confinement prompts prophetic figures to write more prolifically. There are themes that run through all three writers’ reflections\, and they offer theological riches worth mining in our own time\, in a world beset by chaos and suffering. Dean Thomason will guide an exploration of the points of convergence. No preparation is needed to participate fully\, but if you want to read some samples in advance\, read Paul’s Letter to the Philippians (esp ch. 2-4)\, any of Bonhoeffer’s writings compiled posthumously by his friend Eberhard Bethge\, excerpted here\, and/or King’s Letter. \n🔗 Zoom link for virtual participation \nProgram is free; optional community dinner at 6 p.m. ($8/adult; $25/family max.)

SUMMARY:Joint Ministry Potluck: Beekeeping Ministry & QuiC
DESCRIPTION:SUNDAY\, January 11\, 12:30 P.M. (following the 11:00 a.m. service)\, in Bloedel Hall.\nRSVP to queerinchrist@saintmarks.org requested. \nQueer in Christ ministry will join the Beekeeping Ministry for a Potluck in Bloedel Hall on January 11 to listen to a podcast featuring the late environmentalist and “deep ecology” scholar Joanna Macy\, followed by a discussion. This facilitated cross-ministry conversation will draw insights from the podcast to reflect on the life and death cycle of bees as a powerful framework and guide for human relationships. The discussion will highlight how working with bees is a labor of love\, full of both joy and grief as it relates to the impact of the climate crisis. Joanna’s pioneering work gives us a framework to sit with\, honor\, and ultimately transform our feelings of grief\, anger\, and overwhelm from the injustices caused by climate change into empowered\, inspired action. This gathering is open anyone interested engaging with the honeybee on any level\, including holding them in prayer. \nRSVP appreciated\, please bring something to share. \n\n\nNYTimes Obituary for Joanna\nFor the Wild Conversation with Ayanna Young and Joanna\nJoanna Macy on why we need the Great Turning

SUMMARY:Wilderness Spirituality
DESCRIPTION:SATURDAY\, JANUARY 10\, 2025\, 9 A.M.–12:30 P.M.\n \nwith The Rt. Rev. Phil LaBelle\, Bishop of Olympia \nFor centuries\, Christians have been following Jesus’ lead and heading into the wilderness to find God. Wilderness experiences—both those intentionally taken in the natural world and those unplanned and taken metaphorically —strip away what’s unnecessary in our lives and give us an opportunity to pay attention to the inner workings of the soul. Belden Lane suggests that while there are times when we descend into difficult times in our lives\, it is then that we “may discover our greatest joy in having survived the night\, in finding resources we did not know we had\, falling back on a strength that was more than ours.” During this day\, we’ll discuss the realities of being in the wilderness—whether a hiking trail or a difficult season of life—and contemplate how to prepare for those times with spiritual practice\, discovering how we can cross the threshold from a time of descent to one of delight. \n📃 Watch the recording and download the slides of this offering.

SUMMARY:Sunday Forum on Holden Village
DESCRIPTION:SUNDAY\, JANUARY 4\, 10:10–10:50 A.M.\, Bloedel Hall \nCommunity member Sandy Nelson and Canon Wendy Claire Barrie will announce a special opportunity for Saint Mark’s members to stay as a group at Holden Village in the summer of 2026. Holden Village is a retreat center operated by the Lutheran church since 1962\, located in the mountains above Lake Chelan. Its isolation and breathtaking natural beauty make it an extraordinary and unique location for spiritual renewal and transformation\, beloved by many around the world\, including several Saint Mark’s members. Sandy Nelson will share her perspective as a former artist-in-residence and long-term resident. If you have spent time at Holden Village\, please come to the forum to share something about your experience! \nAlthough it is located at a high elevation\, the recent rains and flooding have caused serious mudslides in the area\, and at this time the access road up the mountain to the village is completely blocked. Last weekend 39 staff and three children were evacuated by helicopter\, and the village will remain closed for the remainder of the winter. The Sunday forum will include an update about the current situation and plans for recovery.

SUMMARY:Cathedral Commons—Forum on The Council of Nicaea
DESCRIPTION:WEDNESDAY\, DECEMBER 3\, 6:45–8:15 P.M.\, in person in Bloedel Hall and online via Zoom \nWITH THE REV. CANON RICH WEYLS \nThis past summer marked the 1700th anniversary of the First Council of Nicaea (325). Martin Luther considered it “the most sacred of all councils.” The decrees of the Council helped us find language to describe what we mean when we say “God.” We will explore the historical context of the Council while reflecting upon its rich theology in order to discover significance for today. Rather than being a list of intellectual propositions\, the Council is a gift to the church and an act of praise to God. \nJoin online using this Zoom link. \nProgram is free; optional community dinner at 6 p.m. ($8/adult; $25/family max.)

SUMMARY:Thanksgiving Day Community Dinner
DESCRIPTION:THURSDAY\, NOVEMBER 27\, 11:30 A.M.\, in Bloedel Hall\, registration requested \nThe tradition of a community Thanksgiving potluck meal is a new one for Saint Mark’s Cathedral Parish\, but it has been a wonderful success in the two years since it began. No worries if not—just come and be a part as we give thanks together in this place. \nIn order to plan for room setup and the size of the turkeys\, please reserve your spot no later than 10 a.m. on Monday\, November 24 by using this form.
