SUMMARY:Talking to God in the Whirlwind: A Sufferer’s Wisdom in the Book of Job
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by the Rev. Adam Conley \n \nHow are we to make sense of suffering when God so blithely allows the life of his servant Job to disintegrate into dust and ashes? The Book of Job isn’t an answer to the problem of evil so much as it is a portrait of a human sufferer in relationship to God. This conversation will plumb the depths of this poetic masterpiece to learn how God relates to the sufferer\, and how the sufferer relates to God. \nPart of the Wisdom School 2026-27 season \nProgram is free; optional community dinner at 6 p.m. ($8/adult; $25/family max.)  \n

SUMMARY:Co-reactors or Co-creators?: Christic Life in an Unfinished Universe
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Ilia Delio\, OSF\, PhD \n Teilhard’s Christogenesis is the message of the Risen Christ inscribed on a world in evolution\, yet our world hovers on the brink of death. We are to have faith in this messy world\, peace in the heart\, a spirit of forgiveness\, hope in the future\, and a zest for life. The God who is within and “ahead” of us\, invites us to build our selves\, one another\, and the whole earth into a new community. This new community of many different members\, bound together in love\, is the Christ\, and the Christ is the Trinity unfolding in evolution and enfolding our lives. God becomes human and we become God so that Christ is neither only God nor only human but more God than human and more human than God. Christ is the new creation\, and we are the Christ; hence the world will become what we become and what we become God will become.  Let go\, therefore\, and let yourself be loved. \nFee: $75\, includes light breakfast\, lunch\, and snacks. \nPart of the Wisdom School 2026-27 season \n  \nIlia Delio\, OSF\, PhD\, is a Franciscan Sister of Washington\, DC\, and an American theologian specializing in the area of science and religion\, with interests in evolution\, physics\, and neuroscience and the import of these for theology. \nIlia currently holds the Josephine C. Connelly Endowed Chair in Theology at Villanova University and is the author of twenty books\, including “Care for Creation” (coauthored with Keith Warner and Pamela Woods)\, which won two Catholic Press Book Awards in 2009: first place for social concerns and second place in spirituality. Her book “The Emergent Christ” won a third-place Catholic Press Book Award in 2011 for the area of Science and Religion. Her recent books include “The Unbearable Wholeness of Being: God\, Evolution\, and the Power of Love” (Orbis\, 2013)\, which received the 2014 Silver Nautilus Book Award and a third-place Catholic Press Association Award for Faith and Science. Ilia holds two honorary doctorates\, one from St. Francis University in 2015\, and one from Sacred Heart University in 2020.

SUMMARY:Sacred Words: Writing as a Healing Practice
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Debie Thomas \nTheologian and priest Henri Nouwen described writing as a “true spiritual discipline” that can help redeem experiences of pain\, hardship\, and suffering.  Through writing\, we can reflect on difficult experiences\, clarify our thoughts and questions\, integrate our emotions\, and offer up our words and stories to God\, who is the Living and Loving Word. \nIn this workshop\, we will consider what it means to write as a practice of healing.  Guided by free-writing exercises and prompts; meditations on scripture\, nature\, and visual art; and collaborative conversation\, we will practice shaping our experiences into writing that draws us closer to what is real and sacred.  We will explore how spiritual writing can help foster resilience and wholeness in a chaotic world.  At the conclusion of our time together\, attendees who wish to share a brief piece of their writing will be welcome to do so during an informal “open mic” reading.  No previous writing experience is necessary. \nFee: $45\, includes light breakfast\, lunch\, and snacks. \nPart of the Wisdom School 2026-27 season \n  \nDebie Thomas is the author of A Faith of Many Rooms: Inhabiting a More Spacious Christianity\, and Into the Mess and Other Jesus Stories: Reflections on the Life of Christ. She’s also a columnist and contributing editor for The Christian Century.  From 2014 to 2022\, Debie worked as a staff writer for Journey with Jesus: A Weekly Webzine for the Global Church\, and from 2014 to 2024\, she served as a lay minister for formation at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Palo Alto\, CA. Debie studied English Literature at Wellesley College and Brown University\, and earned an MFA in Creative Writing at The Ohio State University. She was ordained an Episcopal priest in June 2026 at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. \nDebie was born in Kerala\, South India\, and raised in Boston\, Massachusetts. Like many children of immigrants\, she grew up juggling a complicated and often confusing mix of identities: South Asian\, New England suburban\, evangelical\, and feminist. She writes: “In the murky “in-betweenness” of those identities\, I learned that life is far more varied and messy than it is neat or certain\, and that faith is not about finding once-and-for-all answers\, but about delving deeper and deeper into mystery. I was a preacher’s kid and a church nerd\, but also the annoying little brat who asked all the “wrong” questions about God\, faith\, doubt\, life\, and the Bible. I started writing as soon as I learned to read and spell. I was lucky to have a mom who introduced me early to the treasures of language and literature\, and writing soon became my way of processing my world. Whenever I felt awed\, bewildered\, frightened\, or joyful\, I turned to pen and paper for refuge and grounding\, and found that the “Word made flesh” is closer and more loving than I can ever imagine. I write about faith because faith is both hard and life-giving\, both beautiful and bizarre. I write because I don’t know\, and because God somehow meets me in that unknowing.  I find solace in wrestling and seeking blessing on the page\, and I hope that my journey gives others permission to wrestle\, too.”
