There is no doing it right or wrong; there is only doing it. It is a gentle\, restorative\, and contemplative practice\, and the instructors guide the group in ways that welcome newcomer and experienced practitioners alike. \n\nPay what you can.\nMats are available to borrow (first come\, first served).\nThe doors into the cathedral are opened at 6 p.m. and then locked at 6:30 p.m.\nOn the third Monday of each month the class ends with an extended savasana with Sound Bath\, 7:30–7:45 p.m. As the doors are locked at 6:30\, it is no longer possible to attend the sound bath without attending the class. DESCRIPTION:WEDNESDAY\, APRIL 1\, 7 P.M.\, in the cathedral nave and livestreamed \nTenebrae is\, for many\, a highlight of the liturgical year at Saint Mark’s\, with its plainchant psalms and laments and a cappella meditations. The liturgy for Wednesday of Holy Week as we have it today was created by combining elements of three prayer offices\, originally appointed for Wednesday\, Thursday\, and Friday\, containing unique elements that have inspired composers through the centuries. These elements include the chanting of portions of the Book of Lamentations\, with its distinctive Hebrew letters at the beginning of each verse\, sung responsories which serve as small windows into the Passion narrative\, and a complete rendition of Psalm 51\, known as the Miserere. It is\, in the words of The Book of Occasional Services\, “an extended mediation upon\, and a prelude to” the events of the Triduum. \nThe word tenebrae means “shadows\,” and the most memorable element of the liturgy is the transformation of the space itself\, without electric light: we begin in twilight and are gradually engulfed by darkness as the service progresses.

DESCRIPTION:EVERY MONDAY\, in the cathedral nave \nDOORS OPEN AT 6 P.M. (Door are locked at the beginning of class at 6:30 p.m.)\nYOGA CLASS 6:30–7:30 P.M. \nIn the sacred space of Saint Mark’s Cathedral\, this spiritual practice is designed to improve health\, release tension\, and deepen spirituality. It is a gentle\, restorative\, and contemplative practice\, and the instructors guide the group in ways that welcome newcomer and experienced practitioners alike. \n\nPay what you can.\nMats are available to borrow (first come\, first served).\nThe doors into the cathedral are opened at 6 p.m. and then locked at 6:30 p.m.\nOn the third Monday of each month the class ends with an extended savasana with Sound Bath\, 7:30–7:45 p.m. As the doors are locked at 6:30\, it is no longer possible to attend the sound bath without attending the class. Participants are encouraged to stay for the entire experience if possible.\nOn the fourth Monday of each month\, class is followed by social time with tea and chat.\n\nLearn more here. Questions? DESCRIPTION:LAST SUNDAY OF THE MONTH\, 12:30 P.M.\, gather in the back of the nave \nOn the last Sunday of each month\, a cathedral docent will offer a guided tour at 12:30 pm. These tours highlighting the cathedral’s history and architecture last about an hour and participants move throughout the building\, though the elevator is available. Meet at the back of the nave under the clock at 12:30 pm.

DESCRIPTION:MOST TUESDAYS\, 7–8 P.M.\, in the cathedral nave \nNOTE: Contemplative Prayer is suspended when the monthly Taizé service is offered in the nave instead. Contemplative Prayer is also occasionally suspended or relocated on other Tuesdays due to other events and conflicts in the nave.  \n \nTuesday evening Contemplative Prayer gatherings begin with a period of silent meditation\, followed by discussions on a variety of contemplative practices including Centering Prayer \nThis time of meditative prayer is open to anyone who yearns for a time to simply sit in the presence of the Divine—whether you sit regularly and miss doing it with others\, are curious\, or think you can’t do it\, come\, sit together and talk about it. There is no doing it right or wrong; there is only doing it. Read more here. \nThese sessions will be led by Phil Fox Rose\, who was introduced to centering prayer by Cynthia Bourgeault in the early 90s and has been practicing and sharing it ever since.
