Using steadfastly non-digital modalities\, we tell the stories and then make space for the children to make the stories their own for life by using the materials or art to expand\, retell\, and experience the stories in their own ways. For example\, it’s magical to watch children self-organize to collectively create a “crucifixion and Easter scape” by finding and arranging materials from the room to arrange in a box of sand to exemplify all of Holy Week! We use the Godly Play curriculum. Class sessions are held generally on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month during the school year. \nLearn more and find a complete schedule and registration link here. \n\nParents and Toddlers Room\nWhenever Godly Play is being offered on Sunday morning on the second floor of the St Nicholas Bldg\, the Parents and Toddlers Room is open and available at the same time on the first floor. DESCRIPTION:SUNDAY\, SEPTEMBER 7\, 10 A.M.\, St. Nicholas Bldg\, 2nd floor classrooms \nOn Sunday\, September 7 following the 9 am service\, we welcome families with children in preschool through fifth grade to Godly Play Orientation! This is a great opportunity for children to reconnect with each other after the summer\, decorate a name tag\, meet teachers new and returning\, and spend some time in our beautiful and newly refreshed classrooms. Parents can register their children and hear a Godly Play story with them. \nPlease Note: on this day\, one parent must remain with their child. Because this is the same day as the Parish Picnic\, Children’s Chapel will be offered during the adult sermon at both 9 am and 11 am services. Families who attend the 9 am service are encouraged to meet up at the Volunteer Park playground during the 11 am service\, and return at noon for the picnic and the Blessing of Backpacks and Briefcases. \nGodly Play is (usually) held on the first and third Sundays of the month following the 9 am service from September through June\, except in November 2025 and April 2026 when it will meet on the second and third Sundays. DESCRIPTION:SATURDAY\, MARCH 8\,\nSATURDAY\, APRIL 5\,\nSATURDAY\, MAY 10\,\n \n9 A.M.– 5 P.M.\, in the St. Nicholas Bldg\, 2nd floor. Registration required. \nThe most comprehensive training on Godly Play practices and theology\, Core Training is recommended for every adult leading Godly Play sessions\, or anyone who is interested in learning more. \nOver the course of three monthly sessions\, participants experience all aspects of the Godly Play method and begin to become fluent in the Godly Play core stories and fundamental practices. Additionally\, Godly Play’s guiding “Theology of Childhood” is introduced\, so participants become more deeply connected to their work. The training will be led by Saint Mark’s own Canon Vicar\, the Rev. Canon Emily Griffin\, who\, in addition to her role at the cathedral\, has also been a Godly Play Trainer since 2007 and serves as President of the Board of the Godly Play Foundation. \nParticipants are encouraged to attend all three trainings\, but are welcome to attend whichever their schedule allows. This book group is hosted by the 20s & 30s group\, but all are welcome to join. “As a botanist\, Robin Wall Kimmerer has been trained to ask questions of nature with the tools of science. As a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation\, she embraces the notion that plants and animals are our oldest teachers. In Braiding Sweetgrass\, Kimmerer brings these two lenses of knowledge together to take us on ‘a journey that is every bit as mythic as it is scientific\, as sacred as it is historical\, as clever as it is wise.’” (Elizabeth Gilbert).
