“ It takes a mix of skill and luck to tend a garden well, but it’s impossible without a certain amount of kindness tended. While the cyclical nature of gardening seems inherent, in some ways, Heynderickx is just beginning. Her debut album, named I Need to Start a Garden out of a search for calm through these waves of uncertainty and upheaval, is out now via Mama Bird Recording Co. For the empathetic singer/songwriter, the reasons for seeking such acceptance and understanding stem from a life of paradoxes.
Heynderickx grew up in a religious household in Oregon, closely identifying with her Filipino roots, but also straddling multiple cultural identities. Now residing in Portland, her faith is not overt, but her introspection and continued struggle for self-actualization are easily accessible and relatable. Likewise, the tracks on I Need to Start a Garden reflect these seemingly disparate elements. Because the beauty of a garden is that, while it’s often started for deeply personal reasons, its bounty is best consumed and shared with others.” – Artist Bio
Eliot Chamberlain and Soliana Gonzalez have been writing songs, harmonizing and performing together in Portland since March 2020. They could be described as a folk duo – though their music draws from a wide array of traditions and inspirations. Soli grew up climbing trees in N.Y. state, singing with her sisters, making art and falling in love with early folk, rock and the latin music of her Colombian heritage. Meanwhile, Eliot is your classic West Coast bluegrass banjo player turned psychedelic rock guitarist and songwriter, moving from Santa Cruz to Portland in 2013. With their distinct backgrounds, geographical origins and styles, it’s almost uncanny how well their voices and musical sensibilities blend.
Chamberlain / Gonzalez released their sophomore album “Gonzolain” on 6/21/24. The songs were recorded mostly live in their basement and in Blue Room studios with the brilliant guidance and expertise of Mike Coykendall. For this album, as for their first, their aim is to make music that is somehow honest and responsive to our current time.
Chamberlain / Gonzalez features vocal harmonies, original compositions, acoustic guitar and fingerpicking; they draw inspiration from many genres of music including: early English folk, americana roots, blues, jazz, latin, protest, 60/70s, world music, etc.”
