Cathedral Commons: Cultivating Beloved Community

You are warmly invited to join for conversation, connection, and creativity at this forum presented by the Affordable Housing Committee at Saint Mark’s Cathedral. We’ll share with Saint Mark’s members, neighbors, and community partners the good news of “repent and repair” as we prepare to welcome new neighbors to Cathedral Place, an affordable housing community on the property of the St. Nicholas School to the north of the cathedral. As part of this effort, we are telling the story of how we intend to co-create beloved community through a community-based organization that will offer services and support to the residents of Cathedral Place. We’re also sharing the history of our neighborhood and our own complicity in excluding Black residents from home ownership through the Visual Storytelling Project, a narrative art installation describing our relationship with the practice of redlining and racially restrictive covenants in the Capitol Hill neighborhood. Let’s imagine together what beloved community and a flourishing neighborhood looks and feels like, and what it might ask of us to cultivate it.
