Faith Communities & Firearm Injury Prevention

Wednesday, December 2, 2026 · 6:45 pm - 8:15 pm · Bloedel Hall & Online via Zoom

featuring Gregory Engel, MD, MPH, President of Ceasefire Northwest, and Greg Schwab, Assistant Superintendent of the Edmonds School District

Firearm injury and death affect families and communities across our country. For more than a decade, Dr. Engel and his colleagues have worked to bring evidence-based firearm injury prevention education to students in Washington schools. Over the past three years, Greg Schwab has helped lead efforts to expand this education throughout the Edmonds School District. Their work reflects a straightforward principle: young people deserve accurate, age-appropriate information that helps them understand firearm injury as a preventable public health problem and equips them to make informed decisions.

Faith communities have long played an important role in education, moral reflection, and care for our neighbors. Churches, synagogues, mosques, and other religious communities bring people together across generations and build relationships of trust. These strengths offer an important foundation for helping young people receive the knowledge and support they need to stay safe.
The forum will explore why this education matters, what has been learned from working with students, and goals for the future. Most importantly, we want to engage you in a conversation about the distinctive and potentially powerful role faith communities can play in this effort:
  • How can congregations help young people and families access reliable information?
  • How can faith leaders foster thoughtful, constructive conversations about safety, responsibility, and the value of human life?
  • How might faith communities work with schools, health professionals, and other community partners to advance firearm injury prevention education?
This will be a collaborative discussion, not simply a presentation. We hope you will share your perspectives, raise questions, and help us identify practical ways faith communities can contribute to this work. Our goal is to leave with a clearer understanding of the opportunities before us and ideas for working together.
