This group provides a weekly conversation around the scripture readings for the following Sunday. Each week a discussion is facilitated by rotating guest leaders, and lively conversation ensues as people share their thoughts about the lessons. The group meets from 12–1:30 p.m. for study and prayer over the lectionary, led by a rotating member of the cathedral staff and clergy. Join early at 11:30 for social time. The Contemplative Prayer group gathers in the Saint Mark’s Cathedral nave each week. Meetings begin with a time of silent meditation, followed by a discussion of contemplative experience and practices, including Centering Prayer.

Gather in McCaw Chapel—the space in the cathedral nave behind the altar platform, beneath the rose window. Whatever your prior experience with the Daily Office, come and pray together in community. Attendees can head down to the community dinner in Bloedel Hall at 6 p.m. immediately following the service, and are encouraged to stick around for a Cathedral Commons forum if one is scheduled.

A community dinner, prepared by Chef Marc Aubertin and his team, is served in Bloedel Hall. Due to food safety requirements, food service must end at 6:30 p.m. sharp. Cost: $6/child; $8/adult; $25/max. family.
How are we to respond to human suffering in our time? What does solidarity with those who are suffering look like? What does compassion, meaning ‘to suffer with,’ really mean in a world that has erected all sorts of diversions—the economies of war, wealth disparities, and constant entertainment? If we are created in God’s image, and if there is so much suffering in the world, then God, too, must be suffering.

A service of Holy Eucharist is offered at 7:30 a.m. in Thomsen Chapel on the first, third, and fifth Thursdays of each month. The service is followed by fellowship and a community breakfast in Leffler House.

All current and aspiring liturgical ministers are invited to join a morning of learning and training on Saturday, September 19 in Bloedel Hall. This is an opportunity to reflect on both the “whys” and “hows” of Episcopal worship as expressed here at Saint Mark’s. Individual ministry groups will have time to gather as well. All liturgical ministers are asked to attend one of these trainings at least once every three years. RSVP here and contact David Poortinga with any questions.

Children’s Chapel is offered each Sunday at the 9 a.m. service. Children in preschool through second grade are invited to join the Gospel procession around the Deacon as the Gospel is proclaimed. Then they process to Thomsen Chapel for the Gospel story in a developmentally appropriate telling, singing, and prayer. They return to their families at the Peace. Younger children may attend accompanied by a parent or caregiver.
Liturgy with sermon and hymns. Music is offered by Saint Mark’s Singers or children’s choirs. Children’s Chapel is offered during the 9 a.m. service. After the Gospel is proclaimed, children pre-school through 2nd grade are invited to Thomsen Chapel for Bible stories, singing, and prayer. Parents are welcome to join their children. Godly Play is a Montessori-based curriculum that recognizes that children are already in relationship with God. On September 20, the younger class will hear about the Holy Bible while the older class will learn about the Books of the Bible.
