A note on the use of incense

The use of incense in worship is extremely ancient, practiced continually for thousands of years, back to the time of the Hebrew scriptures and beyond. However, we acknowledge that the smoke causes respiratory difficulty for some people, and its use can, in practice, cause some people to feel excluded from worship. We use all-natural incense at monthly Evensong services, the 11 a.m. Sunday service on major feast days (Easter, Pentecost, All Saint’s Day), 11 p.m. Christmas Eve, the Great Vigil of Easter (8:30 p.m.), and the "O" Antiphons service in early December (7 p.m.). Occasionally services including the participation of the Bishop will also use incense, at the Bishop's request. On most of these occasions there is an incense-free alternative service offered earlier the same day. All these services are live-streamed at saintmarks.org/livestream as well.
