As part of the cathedral’s music program, the Music Series is called to offer its musical riches to the wider community so that all can experience the unique acoustical environment, superb pipe organs, and talented musicians dedicated to making music in a sacred space. Concerts have both in-person and livestreamed ticket options.

Please note: the spaces of the cathedral building are frequently made available to community and touring groups as a performance venue. Such events are NOT listed on this page—the Saint Mark's Music Series is an annual series of concerts organized and presented by the cathedral itself. Public performances by outside groups can often be found on the cathedral Events Calendar.

Kimberly Marshall will perform Saint Mark’s annual All-Bach concert. This multi-faceted musician is known for pushing the organ to its limits with her virtuosic playing. Combining her artistry on the Flentrop with Bach’s genius will surely be awe-inspiring.

CHORAL EVENSONG

FIRST SUNDAYS, OCTOBER–JUNE, 4:30 P.M., in the cathedral nave, and livestreamed

Choral Evensong is a treasure among Christian liturgies in the Anglican tradition. Saint Mark’s Evensong Choir comprises an adult subgroup of the Cathedral Choir and advanced teens and younger choristers of the Saint Mark’s Cathedral Choir School. In August of 2022, this choir sang daily Evensong as choir-in-residence for one week each at Chichester and Bristol Cathedrals, England. They previously had served residencies at Ely Cathedral and Saint Paul’s Cathedral, London, in the summer of 2018. Learn more about the Evensong Choir here.

The "O" Antiphons: Advent Procession with Lessons and Carols

This beloved annual liturgy of music and pageantry celebrates the beginning of Advent—the season of longing, vigilance, and expectation in preparation for Christmas. Sung by the Cathedral Choir, Compline Choir, and Senior Choristers of Saint Mark’s Choir School. Offered in person in the cathedral nave and livestreamed.

The Pageant of the Nativity

Wednesday, December 20, 2023, 7 p.m.

Choir School choristers, the Evensong Choir, and the young children of Saint Mark’s join forces with guest instrumentalists, costumes of cathedral finery, and visual art set within soaring architecture to create a Christmas pageant like no other—a reflection and meditation on the Nativity story as told in Holy Scripture. Join in hymns and carols of the season, both familiar and new, and hear choir anthems ranging from medieval chant to 21st-century world premieres.

This celebration of the twentieth anniversary of the Marion Camp Oliver Organ in Thomsen Chapel, installed by Paul Fritts & Co. in 2003, featured organists Michael Kleinschmidt and John Stuntebeck, with violist Mel Butler and remarks by Herb Williams.

One of the world’s pre-eminent a cappella choral ensembles, Apollo5, filled Saint Mark’s with their exquisite one-on-a-part blend. They shared a portion of the program with Seattle Pro Musica and Seattle-area students with whom they will work during the days prior.

Apollo5 consists of Penelope Appleyard, soprano, Clare Stewart, soprano, Oscar Golden-Lee, tenor, Oliver Martin-Smith, tenor, and Augustus Perkins Ray, bass.

The Cathedral Trio, comprised of past and present Saint Mark’s Resident Artists, performed a concert juxtaposing traditional styles with new musical ideas in the ethereal acoustical environment of McCaw Chapel.

Organist James Kealey returned to play the Flentrop Organ, the instrument on which he competed in the final round and won the American Guild of Organists’ National Young Artists Competition in Organ Performance in July 2022.

These concerts, featuring The Compline Choir, the Byrd Ensemble, acclaimed countertenor José Luis Muñoz, and a parley of instruments, will launch the centenary year of Peter Hallock’s birth. Programs will include music spanning the Renaissance to the present day, along with a selection of Hallock’s own compositions, and a song cycle for countertenor.

This masterwork examining the spirituality of the Book of Revelation, composed by Olivier Messiaen while imprisoned in a German prisoner-of-war camp during WWII, will be performed in the nave in contemplation of Palm Sunday and the coming Holy Week.
